Beyond the Firm

I have three adult children and three grandchildren. My life and family have followed a competitive path and passion for sports, adventure, outdoor activities and education.

Defining Legal Moment

I was representing a defendant in a criminal case that took place in a small town in northern Wisconsin. I will always remember the words, wisdom and animation of the elderly woman jury foreperson following the unanimous verdict reached in favor of my client.

She told me in no uncertain terms as she directed me and my client out of the courthouse that we should immediately leave town and never return. This verdict, action, and statement made by this juror in that small local community where everybody knew everyone in the case except my client and me as his lawyer defines the essence and integrity of our legal system of justice: It is designed to make judgments on the basis of the facts and the law rather than who we are, how we look, or who we know.
